Porch.com believes it has found the best metropolitan area in the U.S. for single millennials, which Pew Research Center defines as those born between 1981 – 96.
Envelope, please. And the winner is …
Charleston-North Charleston, South Carolina.
Porch developed a model of analysis for 150 metro areas that weighted toward areas with more millennials — for better millennial-on-millennial socializing — large single populations, healthy job markets, and an abundance of food and entertainment options. Researchers analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis to create a composite score based on those factors.
For example, here’s how the Charleston metro area scored:
Composite score: 100.0
Percentage of millennials that are single: 40.5%
Gender ratio among millennials: 0.8% more women
Millennial share of the population: 23.9%
Employment rate among single millennials (compared to average): plus-6.3%
Median adjusted income for full-time millennials: $47,374
Food and entertainment rank: 27
The top metro area in Texas? Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown (yawn) with a composite score of 85.8.
Dallas-Fort Worth, defined by Porch as “Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington” came in at 22nd, broken down as follows:
Composite score: 69.5
Percentage of millennials that are single: 35%
Gender ratio among millennials: 1.6% more women
Millennial share of the population: 23.3%
Employment rate among single millennials (compared to average): plus-3.4%
Median adjusted income for full-time millennials: $44,466
Food and entertainment rank: 79
Flaw uncovered: How do you score a 79 when in Fort Worth alone you have the best darned barbecue and Mexican food around (as far as we're concerned)? Dallas must be weighting us down.
That score ranked DFW second in Texas. San Antonio was ranked 48th, Houston 65th, and El Paso 113th.
Rounding out the top five nationally were:
2. Boston-Cambridge-Newton (Massachusetts/New Hampshire)
3. Washington, D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria (Virginia/Maryland/West Virginia)
4. San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley (California)
