This is a developing story. Check back for more this morning.
Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election May 1, after 10 years in the seat.
Price made the announcement during a 10 a.m. news conference at Fort Worth City Hail. Her decision had been widely expected and will lead to changes in other City Council seats. Here’s Fort Worth Inc.’s story from Monday outlining those changes and what the potential candidates say.
City Councilman Brian Byrd, who represents the West Side District 3, has said he will run for mayor if Price vacates the seat. His district director for four years, Michael Crain, said Monday he will run for Byrd’s seat if Byrd leaves it.
Dee Kelly Jr., the Fort Worth lawyer, is widely expected to run for mayor. Monday, he deferred to Mayor Price.
Deborah Peoples, chairman of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, has run previously for mayor against Price. Monday, she posted “I’m running!” on her Facebook page.
Other potential candidates are City Council member Ann Zadeh and State Rep. Ramon Romero, Jr.
In the Fort Worth District 7 race, City Councilman Dennis Shingleton told Fort Worth Inc. Monday that he probably won’t seek re-election in May. Shingleton and Price joined the council at the same time.
If Shingleton doesn’t run, entrepreneur Leonard Firestone told Fort Worth Inc. in an interview he will seek the seat.
