Don Reynolds of Reynolds & Reynolds Group
Don Reynolds offers 40-plus years of experience in forecasting industry trends, analyzing global economics, and finding opportunities in various business markets. The Fort Worth native who has traveled the globe as a keynote speaker for prestigious financial conferences continues to study and analyze world affairs.
Making History
Reynolds smiles as he talks about representing oil magnate Eddie Chiles when he sold the majority stock of the Texas Rangers baseball team for $65 million to George W. Bush in 1989.
“All of us were packed in a room, holding our breath and waiting for the transaction to close,” he reminisces. “Everyone was staring at me, and I was nervous to say the least. But then the wire transfer came through at the main control desk, I joyously made the announcement to a room full of smiling people, the happiest of which was Eddie.”
This success is just one of many from Reynolds’ extensive career, which spans over 45 years and includes both worldwide speaking engagements and big-time business deals. He is a past Chair of Investment of public accounts totaling $140 billion, including public pension funds and the Texas Permanent School Fund.
Another career-changing experience that Reynolds remembers fondly is developing the IPO for Pilgrim’s Pride and taking Lonnie “Bo” Pilgrim public. After reading an article in a Texas magazine that named Reynolds a rising star, the two met and began working together. “It was “a terrific relationship that lasted 40 years,” said Reynolds.
Market Dynamics
In the past, Reynolds has been described as “the guru of oil forecasting” and has been highlighted in Fort Worth Magazine as one of the city’s “16 Brilliant Minds”. His financial planning expertise and worldwide speaking engagements have made him stand out as a Fort Worth financial advisor—and resident—for quite some time.
Throughout the course of his speaking career, Reynolds has shared his knowledge with prestigious groups across Europe, along with those at the Saudi Arabian Central Bank and the University of Moscow (where Reynolds has an honorary degree). He has keynoted the Australian IT Summit, and advised the heavy equipment operators in Rome. Persons in this region have sought his insights. For example, he spoke before the Building Owners and Management Association, BOMA, 12 years in-a-row.
The Velocity of Change
The people whom he has met and the dynamic action of the markets are two of Reynold’s favorites about his career. Right now, he’s spending his time exploring the disparity between technology and value, an interesting subject that will be explored more and more.
Reynolds’ financial analyses involve two key subject matters; diversification and preservation of capital. He also notes that, in a rapidly changing world, people strive to think more proactively.
“The velocity of change is moving progressively faster and faster,” said Reynolds. “A proactive strategy is necessary for success. We should all be projecting into the future.”
One way to do this, he says, is to research the market and analyze what you’re not seeing in your research. He often looks between the news headlines to uncover ideas where he could find a bargain.
“What I focus on is what I’m not reading,” said Reynolds. “When everyone knows the deal, it’s not a good deal.”
