The city of Fort Worth has received $5.7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of a $420 million nationwide initiative to eliminate lead-based hazards in homes.
The grant is designed to help protect children and families from the dangers of lead exposure, with a focus on low-income households.
The funds will be used to identify and remove lead paint hazards in homes with children under 6.
Lead exposure poses significant health risks, particularly for young children, whose developing nervous systems are especially vulnerable. Pregnant women and adults are also at risk, with potential side effects such as reduced fetal growth, preterm births, high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, and kidney damage.
The city’s Neighborhood Services staff will host a press conference later this week at the New City Hall to outline more details.
