Amber M.K. Smallwood has been appointed senior vice provost of faculty affairs at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth.
She will start Oct. 1.
In the role, Smallwood will be a senior academic administrator with university-wide responsibilities related to assisting the deputy provost in the supervision and management of all academic colleges, departments and programs.
Smallwood holds a doctorate in mass communication and American studies from Indiana University. She also has a master’s in telecommunications from Ohio University and a bachelor’s in radio-television-film from University of Texas.
Smallwood has held several significant administrative positions, including vice provost of academic innovation at UT Arlington.
At UTA, she led strategic innovation initiatives to support and accelerate adoption across academic units, reshaping and developing infrastructure to enhance the university’s portfolio of online programs. Also at UTA, she served as assistant vice provost of academic planning and policy, where she coordinated the university’s academic program portfolio and facilitated curriculum development.
Previously, Smallwood also was interim dean of the College of Social Sciences at the University of West Georgia. She oversaw strategic planning and operations, faculty and staff recruitment, academic programming and community engagement. She also served as associate dean of the College of Social Sciences at UWG where she collaborated with the dean in overall management and planning.
At UWG, the university recognized her as Faculty Member of the Year and later Advisor Advocate of the Year. Later, back in Texas, she participated in the Texas Academic Leadership Academy. Most recently, she has served as vice president, president and now past president of the Texas Council of Chief Academic Officers.
