Near Southside, Inc. has launched a fund to raise money and distribute $250 grants to creatives and service industry people who are experiencing financial hardships from COVID-19.
The Southside C.A.R.E.S. fund went live Thursday. Marilyn and Marty Englander, owners of Kent & Co. on West Magnolia Avenue, agreed to match gifts to the fund up to a total $10,000. Near Southside, through the website, is accepting other gifts and taking applications for one-time grants.
Any person formerly or currently employed in the Near Southside who’s facing a COVID-19-related hardship is invited to apply for the grants. Those trades and crafts include:
· Culinary
· Art
· Retail
· Entertainment
· Service, including restaurants, bars, health instructors, stylists, and service managers
Applications will be reviewed in the order they’re received. Applicants are asked to provide a statement of need and simple explanation of how COVID-19 has affected them. Applicants must demonstrate a “professional” connection to the district, such as an employer connection or, if a freelancer or contractor, a residential address. According to the Near Southside, “Funds will be distributed as long as they are available."
