TCU announced on Monday that it had appointed Dr. Floyd L. Wormley Jr., as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, effective Jan. 1.
The appointment marks a promotion. For the past year, Wormley has served as the interim provost. He has been at TCU since 2019, serving as associate provost for research and dean of Graduate Studies. In that role, Wormley has overseen the doubling of external research expenditures and the expansion of the offices of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance, according to the university.
As provost, Wormley will continue to apply his scholarly expertise to advise and mentor faculty, staff and students in research and creative endeavors. He also will continue his research and work with students through his National Institutes of Health-funded laboratory.
“Dr. Wormley’s commitment to service leadership, collaboration and integrity has effectively driven TCU’s research, scholarship and creative activities across all disciplines,” TCU President Daniel W. Pullin said in a statement. “This is a time of incredible opportunity for TCU, and we are thrilled to have Dr. Wormley in a key leadership position as we continue to invest in scholarship and student-centered growth.”
Wormley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University, a Master of Science and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and completed postdoctoral training at Duke University Medical Center.
Before arriving at TCU, Wormley served as an academic leader, professor and researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
The search committee was led by co-chairs, Dr. Kathy Cavins-Tull, TCU vice chancellor for Student Affairs, and Dr. Omar Harvey, Geology Department chair and professor.
Cavins-Tull called the roster of candidates “impressive.” Wormley stood out, she said, through his “ability to inspire students and colleagues with his intelligence and his energetic and approachable demeanor.”
“I am grateful to our TCU community, including the search committee, the chancellor and president for their faith in my ability to lead the many faculty and staff who make a positive difference for TCU students,” Wormley said. “TCU has been my home for nearly six years, and I am thrilled to be able to build upon the academic excellence, important scholarship and creative activity already in progress. It is an honor to work closely with our esteemed faculty, our dedicated staff, our students, our Board of Trustees and my colleagues as we embark on this next chapter for our incredible university.”
