Fort Worth-based Standard Meat Company announced on Tuesday that it had acquired Syracuse Sausage, a popular, family owned brand in Ponder.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Syracuse Sausage was founded by Joe Musacchio but has been under the leadership of his brothers Bobby and Anthony Musacchio for the past decade.
The acquisition marks the final chapter in a partnership that began around that time. Standard Meat Company, owned by the Rosenthal family and operated by brother and sister Ben Rosenthal and Ashli Rosenthal Blumenfeld, partnered with Syracuse Sausage with plans to increase production and reach the widest possible audience. Today, Syracuse Sausage serves national restaurant chains, major grocery stores, meal kit companies, and other food-service firms.
“Our partnership has been incredible,” says Ben Rosenthal, CEO and co-president of Standard Meat Company. “We are honored to continue to carry out their 40-year legacy as we integrate the business into Standard Meat, ensuring both companies continue their focus as one united organization.”
The Rosenthals also announced that Chris Horan, a food industry veteran who began his food career in 1986 as a sales representative for Campbell’s Soup Company in Florida, will lead the new Syracuse Sausage division. Over the past 30-plus years since Campbell’s, Horan has worked for a number of industry leaders, including HJ Heinz, Henri’s Foods, CTI Foods, and Classic Foods.
“We had the pleasure of getting to know Chris when he came to work with our family at CTI Foods in 2006 as the vice president of business development,” says Blumenfeld, Standard Meat co-president. “Before the Syracuse acquisition, Chris was a consultant to both Standard Meat and Syracuse Sausage. His knowledge of our industry and our companies makes him the perfect choice to lead this new division of Standard Meat.”
Standard Meat Company is a multi-generational protein packaging and portioning company founded in 1935 by the first Ben Rosenthal, Ben Rosenthal and Ashli Blumenfeld’s great-grandfather. Their grandfather Manny, who started work there at age 13 before studying meat science and business at Texas A&M, became president of the company in 1959. Manny’s son Billy Rosenthal, a University of Texas graduate, joined the company in 1972. Billy became president in 1981.
“Syracuse’s capabilities and product offerings dovetail beautifully with our current operations and will open doors for new sales opportunities with current and target customers,” says Ben Rosenthal. “Chris is the right leader, and the employees at Syracuse Sausage are a tremendous asset as we join forces.”
Says Bobby Musacchio, now former president of Syracuse Sausage: “We are thankful to the Rosenthal family and Standard Meat Company for their partnership in the past, as well as what we know they’ll bring to Syracuse Sausage in the future. They are the ideal people and company to care for our family’s legacy.”
