Fort Worth students took some time off summerly leisure for a taste of being an employee with the city of Fort Worth.
"It smelled and tasted better than a real landfill," says one in the video above. (OK, I admit that I took that out of context.)
A group of 20 seventh- and eighth-graders spent a week in seven city departments through the Fort Worth school district’s Vital Link, a summer program that teaches students about a variety of careers, as well as hands-on learning from professionals.
Some participating departments included communications and public engagement, code compliance, fire, municipal court, police, transportation, and public works, and water. Students ended the week at City Hall where some even got the chance to sit in the seats of City Council members — except without the stern lectures from citizens at the lectern. Earlier in the week they also suited up in firefighter’s gear in under a minute, there being, of course, very few minutes to spare in an emergency.
