EarthX
Nathan Loftice
Trammell Crow, the real estate developer-turned-environmental activist, has named former BNSF director Nathan Loftice new chief executive of the international environmental nonprofit EarthX.
Loftice moved to EarthX, which Crow founded in 2011, earlier this year as executive vice president of sustainability events and services, from his post as director of business sustainability, planning and permitting for BNSF in Fort Worth.
In promoting Loftice to CEO and executive director, Crow credited Loftice’s business acumen, integrity, leadership, and passion for the environment.
“Nathan is a native Texan whose farming and ranching heritage spans six generations,” Crow said. “Owning land throughout Texas and the West and growing up on a working farm and cattle ranch, he spent most of his time outdoors and has always loved the land working to conserve resources. Nathan has been with us since we started 12 years ago as a volunteer, exhibitor, sponsor, and speaker. He and his family have never missed an event.”
EarthX will host its Half-Earth Day event on Oct. 20-22 and annual Earth Day celebration April 20-23, 2023, both in Dallas. Canceled due to COVID-19, Earth Day’s 2020 event would have included 700 exhibits; 11 conferences; five public stages; 13 banquets and receptions; 450 speakers, and an expected 180,000 attendees based on 2019 numbers.
“In my 30-year career, I have worked on environmental issues all over the world, and I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish with EarthX starting right here in Dallas and growing out of Texas roots,” Loftice said. “Trammell’s unmatched passion and commitment has enabled people to elevate environmental challenges and opportunities. I am a proud Texan, and I believe Texas can lead the herd to a sustainable future, bringing diverse perspectives together right here in the middle of America.”
Loftice worked at BNSF from 2015-22. He was BNSF Employee of the Year in 2018.
Most of Loftice’s professional career was at FedEx, where he oversaw global supply chains, managed risks, and executed efficient sustainable operations, as the international global leader of environmental affairs and business sustainability.
The recipient of FedEx’s highest honor, the Five Star Award for Superior Performance, Loftice led FedEx to industry leader status on the Carbon Disclosure Project and a No. 1 ranking by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partnership in 2009, according to a press release. He was appointed to the International Green Power Market Development Group, where he worked to establish free markets for renewable energy sources and was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA as Green Power Purchaser of the Year. EPA also presented Loftice with numerous Waste Wise Awards for his efforts in waste reduction and operational efficiency.
Early in his career, Loftice, a graduate of the University of Texas, worked as an investigator and first responder and dealt with high-profile cases including environmental crimes and natural and man-made disasters.
For his work on his private lands, he has received awards from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Future Farmers of America.
Loftice has worked with numerous nonprofits and NGOs over the years, including the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation; Conservation International; The Nature Conservancy; National Audubon Society; World Resources Institute; Texas Trees Foundation; Texas Blossoms and Trinity Trust, serving on various boards.
Crow said “Nathan defies the Texas stereotype of being anti-the environment, because during his career in the for-profit world, he was always the corporate champion of sustainability.
“Nathan shares my passion for making the world sustainable for generations to come,” Crow said. “He will reignite our collective spirit to continue what we began more than a decade ago. Stay tuned, as together Nathan and I will be making more announcements very soon regarding our global reach.”
